Imagine waking up beside a peaceful Swedish lake, surrounded by towering pine trees, with nothing but birdsong outside your window. Even better, imagine enjoying this experience without paying for accommodation.
Sweden has an extraordinary network of wilderness cabins where visitors can spend the night completely free of charge. Scattered across forests, national parks and remote countryside, these rustic shelters offer an affordable alternative to conventional hotels and campsites.
From charming wooden cottages to basic hiking huts, they provide an unusual way to discover the country's natural beauty.

Sweden's Tradition Of Free Accommodation

Sweden's relationship with nature is shaped by allemansrätten, the traditional right of public access. This allows people to explore much of the countryside on foot, by bicycle or on skis, provided they respect private property and protect the environment.
Alongside these freedoms, visitors can discover hundreds of publicly accessible overnight shelters.
Some were originally hunting lodges or fishing cottages, while others are historic rural properties made available for public use.
Photographer Moa Karlberg and writer Kjell Vowles documented more than 250 such cabins in their guidebook Stuglandet, revealing a lesser-known side of Swedish travel.

Discover The Beautiful High Coast

Skuleskogen National Park, overlooking the Baltic Sea, is particularly appealing for travellers seeking dramatic landscapes.
Its ancient forests, rocky cliffs and coastal walking trails create an unforgettable hiking destination.
According to the park's current visitor information, six overnight cabins are available throughout the year.
Accommodation costs €0, and reservations are not accepted. Visitors can stay for a maximum of two nights, with priority given to new arrivals.
The cabins provide wooden sleeping platforms, mattresses and wood-burning stoves, but guests must bring their own bedding and cooking equipment.

Explore Remote Forest Hideaways

Other fascinating cabins are scattered throughout Sweden.
Near Uppsala, Lunsentorpet provides a traditional countryside retreat surrounded by peaceful woodland.
In southern Sweden, Blommastugan near Torsås offers a historic setting with several rooms.
Further north, Björnlandet National Park features spectacular forest scenery and remote wilderness shelters.
These destinations are particularly attractive for visitors interested in hiking, photography and escaping crowded tourist areas.
However, facilities and overnight-stay rules vary, so individual cabin information should always be checked before travelling.

What Should You Bring?

Free accommodation does not necessarily mean comfortable hotel-style facilities.
Many shelters offer only basic furnishings and heating. Travellers should carry a sleeping bag, warm clothing, sufficient food, drinking water and suitable cooking equipment.
A torch, offline maps and a portable phone charger are also useful.
Most importantly, cabins operate on a first-come, first-served basis. Carrying a tent as backup is sensible, but camping restrictions must be checked, especially inside national parks.

When To Visit And What It Costs

June to September offers pleasant conditions for hiking and exploring Sweden's forests. Autumn brings colourful landscapes, while winter provides opportunities for skiing and snowy wilderness adventures.
The accommodation itself can cost €0 per night, making a two-night stay completely free. Transport, groceries and any necessary equipment remain additional expenses.
Travellers can locate many shelters using Naturkartan, a Swedish outdoor mapping platform.
