Slovenia is famous for its beautiful lakes and Alpine scenery, but some of its most memorable destinations remain surprisingly overlooked. One of them is Tržič, a picturesque town in the north of the country, surrounded by the Karawanks Mountains and located close to the Austrian border.
Tržič: colourful old town, traditional villages, hiking trails and geology — an affordable alternative to Slovenia’s busy resorts with free nature access.

Discover The Historic Town

Tržič has a fascinating history shaped by centuries of craftsmanship and trade. Its picturesque streets are lined with traditional buildings, while the surrounding mountains create an impressive backdrop.
According to local legend, a dragon once split a nearby mountain, forcing residents to flee into the valley where they eventually established the town.
Today, visitors can discover this heritage at the Tržič Museum, where exhibitions explore traditional shoemaking, leatherworking and other local crafts. Admission to the craft exhibitions costs €4, while a combined ticket including the Slovenian Ski Museum costs €5.
Another interesting attraction is Kurnik's House, one of the town's oldest buildings. Entry costs €3, and visits must be arranged in advance.

Explore The Ancient Dovžan Gorge

Just outside Tržič lies Dovžan Gorge, a spectacular natural landmark carved by the Tržič Bistrica River. Its rocky walls contain fossils dating back approximately 300 million years, when this part of Slovenia was covered by a tropical sea.
The scenic educational trail begins near the village of Čadovlje and takes approximately four hours to complete. Visitors can admire unusual geological formations, woodland and dramatic river views.
Independent walking is free. During the 2026 summer season, organised guided tours cost €7 per person or €20 for a family. These seasonal tours ran until 30 August, so visitors travelling later should enquire about alternative arrangements.

Experience The Alpine Mountains

The mountains surrounding Tržič provide excellent opportunities for outdoor adventures. One particularly impressive destination is the Košuta ridge, known for its expansive meadows, dramatic summits and panoramic views towards Austria.
Experienced hikers can explore challenging mountain routes, while gentler woodland paths offer opportunities for relaxed countryside walks.
Traditional settlements such as Gozd and Zgornje Vetrno are also worth visiting. Here, wooden hayracks, grazing animals and peaceful landscapes preserve the atmosphere of rural Slovenia.
Most hiking routes can be explored independently without admission charges, although suitable footwear and careful weather planning are essential.

When To Visit And How To Get There

Late spring and early autumn are particularly attractive times to visit Tržič. May and June bring green mountain landscapes, while September offers pleasant hiking conditions and fewer visitors.
Summer is ideal for longer outdoor adventures, although mountain weather can change quickly.
Tržič is approximately 45 kilometres from Ljubljana, making it suitable for a day trip or weekend getaway. Travelling by car provides the greatest flexibility, particularly when visiting remote trailheads and surrounding villages.
Public transport is another possibility, but connections and ticket prices should be checked before departure.

How Much Does A Visit Cost?

Exploring Tržič can be remarkably affordable because many of its most beautiful attractions are natural landscapes.
A visit combining the town's craft exhibitions, Slovenian Ski Museum and Kurnik's House costs €6.50 with a combined adults ticket. Individual admission to the Germovka Forge costs €3, with advance booking required.
Walking through the historic centre and exploring the surrounding countryside can be enjoyed without entrance fees. Accommodation, meals and transport will add to the overall budget, with costs depending on the season and chosen facilities.
